Liang's Hopes Of Claiming Victory On Home Course Dashed After Finishing Joint 17th In Suzhou

CHINESE No. 1 Liang Wenchong, the winner of OneAsia's Luxehills Chengdu Open two weeks ago, had to settle for joint 17th place at the Volvo China Open, after shooting an even-par 72 in the final round in Suzhou yesterday.

With most of the gallery following him on the course, Liang barely smiled after teeing off. The 31-year-old fell two spots from Saturday after finishing overall on seven-under.

He made a bogey on the par-three 13th but managed a birdie right after to save par.

Liang was aiming for his first "home" victory at the 16th China Open since Zhang Lianwei's title back in 2003 in Shanghai. Three other Chinese players - Xu Qin, Yuan Hao and amateur Hu Mu - tied for 60th, while Wu Kangchun finished 67th.

The China Open, the oldest professional golf tournament in the country, is yet to have a two-time winner. Defending champion Scott Strange of Australia did not even make the cut this time round.
