Lin on course to retain crown

A YEAR after winning the tournament in a typhoon-shortened event, China’s Lin Xiyu looks set to blow away the field again at the Sanya’s Hills Ladies Classic.

With the conditions hot and sunny yesterday at the Sanya Dragon Valley Golf Club, the US LPGA Tour regular carded a 6-under 67 to open up a three-shot lead at the China LPGA Tour event in southern Hainan Island.

Chinese amateur Qi Tian continued to impress in her first pro event as the 14-year-old shot an even-par 72 to sit alone in second place, while her 16-year-old compatriot Feng Simin (72) was four shots off the pace. Chinese Taipei’s Lin Tzu-chi (70) and China’s Lu Yuexia (70) were equal fourth, five strokes back.

Lin, 18, who is 7 under through 36 holes, played a near flawless round that included six birdies against a lone bogey.

Overnight co-leader Pavarisa Yoktuan dropped to nine strokes back after the Thai ballooned to a 78.
