Lingmerth storms into PGA lead

DAVID Lingmerth birdied three of his first five holes yesterday to grab a two-stroke lead in the second round of the PGA Championship with overnight leader Dustin Johnson still to tee off.

Sweden’s Lingmerth started the day one adrift after an impressive 5-under 67 in the worst of the afternoon winds in Kohler, Wisconsin, on Thursday.

He kept the momentum going in yesterday morning’s more benign conditions, with birdies at the first, third and fifth at Whistling Straits.

World No. 1 and defending champion Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth of the United States, meanwhile, were making little headway.

Both posted 1-under 71s on Thursday, and both were even through six holes in the second round.

McIlroy got off to a steady start with pars at his first six holes. Spieth was even through six with one birdie and a bogey.

American Zach Johnson, the British Open champion playing in a marquee group with Spieth and McIlroy, put the struggles of his first-round 75 behind him, opening the second round with three straight birdies to get back to even par for the tournament through six holes.

Among those who will be teeing off in the more difficult afternoon wave are first-round pacesetter Johnson and former world No. 1 Tiger Woods, who struggled badly with his putting on the way to an opening 75.

American Woods, who won the last of his 14 majors at the 2008 US Open, has missed the cut in his last two majors and faces an uphill climb if he is to avoid a third in a row for the first time in his career.
