Liu wins US Women’s Open qualifier in Shanghai
Two rounds of par golf proved just enough for rookie pro Liu Yiyi to book her “golden ticket” to the upcoming US Women’s Open as the Shaanxi teenager claimed the lone spot on offer at the China sectional qualifier yesterday.
The 17-year-old carded two rounds of 72 in extremely hot conditions over the Shanghai Qizhong Garden Golf Club course to finish on even-par 144 and win the silver medal. Australian Victoria Fricot (73-72) was one shot behind, while amateur Yu Han-hsuan (71-75) of Chinese Taipei was third, two shots off the pace in the 31-player field. After shooting an erratic opening round that featured four birdies and four bogeys to sit two shot back of first-round leader Li Xiya (70-77), who finished fourth, Liu held steady to post a final round of 35-37.
