Lu savors first victory in 12 years
CHINA'S Lu Yuxia captured her first title in 12 years yesterday when she beat Miho Mori of Japan in a first-hole playoff at the 500,000 yuan (US$78,800) Beijing Pearl Challenge, the first tournament of the China LPGA Tour's fourth season.
After lipping out on a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole of regulation, the 35-year-old Lu, who carded a 69 for a 2-under 214 total, took advantage of an error-filled extra-hole play by Mori who had closed with 70.
With Mori finding a bunker on her second shot on the extra hole - the par-5 18th - Lu safely made the green in three shots. On her third shot, 19-year-old Mori hit a greenside bunker and chipped to within 12-feet of the pin and missed her putt. The veteran Lu, with two putts from 35 feet, made no mistake to claim the 75,000 yuan winner's purse.
"I'm very excited. It's been a long while since my last win, but I never gave up. In those 12 years I lost many cards, but this year I feel good about my game," Beijing-based Guangdong native Lu said.
China's Pan Yanhong, a former weightlifter, finished one shot out of the playoff after carding a 68 in a round that featured five birdies and a lone bogey.
