McIlroy in contention at Cheonan

Former world No. 1 Rory McIlroy overcame five bogeys to leap into contention heading into weekend play at the Kolon Korea Open in Cheonan yesterday.

The two-time major champ compensated for those five hiccups with seven birdies for a 2-under 69 at the par-71 Woo Jeong Hills Country Club, where the Northern Irish star is the marquee name at the US$1 million OneAsia Tour stop.

He is tied for fifth at 3-under for the tournament, two strokes behind the leader Hong Soon-sang. The South Korean fired a bogey-free round of 68.

Three more South Koreans were one stroke behind Hong.

McIlroy, coming off a month-long break, is hoping to pick up his first win of 2013, as he kicked off the late-season Asian swing.

Starting the day on the back nine, McIlroy opened with a birdie, but then committed three straight bogeys starting on the par-4 14th. After making the turn, McIlroy had four birdies against one bogey over his final nine holes.

The world No. 6 said his day was “pretty solid” aside from the bogeys on his first nine.

“I definitely could have been a few shots better, but I’m in a good position going into the weekend and that’s all you can ask for,” McIlroy said.

First-round leader Jang Ik-jae joined McIlroy at 3-under after shooting a 72 yesterday.

In Macau, China, South African Ernie Els fired a 6-under 65 to trail halfway leader Mohammad Siddikur of Bangladesh by one shot at the Venetian Macau Open yesterday.

The four-time major champion struck nine birdies against three bogeys for a two-day total of 6-under 136.

Siddikur shot 66 in his round which included three birdies over his closing four holes, for 135, in his bid to win a second Asian Tour tournament.
