The 24-year-old Northern Irishman, who has slipped to sixth in world rankings, carded a 1-under 70 at the OneAsia Tour event as he continued his search for an elusive first victory of the year.

Japan Tour regular Jang Ik-jae of South Korea returned an error-free 67 to take the lead at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club near Cheonan, south of Seoul.

Twice major winner McIlroy dropped a shot at the third before rallying with a birdie at the next hole. He then made a double-bogey at the par-3 13th after finding water. He ended his round in style with birdies at the 14th, 17th and 18th.

In Macau, China, birthday boy Ernie Els of South Africa struck a even-par 71 to lie three shots behind the leaders after the first round of the Venetian Macau Open yesterday.

The Big Easy found himself 4-over through his opening seven holes but later hit four birdies to revive his round.

Australia’s Scott Barr shared the lead at the Asia Tour tournament with Kiwi Ben Campbell and Kalle Samooja of Finland.
