Mickelson takes first-round lead, Woods 6 back

WHATEVER was bothering Tiger Woods' wrist seemed to disappear overnight, and Phil Mickelson's round of 67 held up as first-round play ended at the US Open yesterday in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.

Mickelson remained the clubhouse leader at 3 under on another rainy day at Merion, although the cool morning drizzle was far gentler than the storms that interrupted play twice on Thursday.

Luke Donald had a chance to match Mickelson's score, but the former world No. 1 missed a 4-foot par putt at No. 18 to finish off a 68.

Woods completed a round of 73 to finish 6 back of Mickelson.

Masters champion Adam Scott was 3 under when darkness stopped play on Thursday, but ended with a 72. Rory McIlroy shot 73.

Mathew Goggin matched Donald with a 68. Russell Knox and Nicolas Colsaerts were the only others to shoot under par. Both shot 69.

A large group at even-par 70 included K.J. Choi, Lee Westwood and Charl Schwartzel.

Mickelson shot his 67 - his best opening round in the U.S. Open since 1999 - on little sleep after an overnight flight from San Diego, where he attended his daughter's school graduation.

He traveled about 3,800 kilometers in the air and 7,000 yards on the ground. He took a short nap on his private jet from San Diego and another one during a rain delay.

For Mickelson, this could be the start of another chance to win the major championship he wants so dearly. Or maybe he's setting himself up for more heartache. He has been a runner-up a record five times in the US Open.

"If I'm able? and I believe I will? if I'm able to ultimately win a US Open, I would say that it's great," Mickelson said. "Because I will have had ... a win and five seconds. But if I never get that win, then it would be a bit heart-breaking."
