Molinari recovers to lead by 2

FRANCESCO Molinari recovered from two bogeys in his first three holes to shoot a 3-under 69 yesterday and retain a two-shot clubhouse lead in the second round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The Italian made five birdies, including three on the back nine, to reach 10-under in the European Tour’s flagship event. Molinari said “the start was very difficult” but he “managed to steady the ship to make it another good day.”

Emiliano Grillo was two shots back after an impressive round of 65, where he made two eagles on the back nine.

The Argentine also holed a steep uphill putt from nearly 50 feet at the 15th for a birdie.

On Thursday, world No. 1 Rory McIlroy was left frustrated as Molinari headed the leader board at the end of the first day. Molinari carded a seven-under par 65 with no bogeys finishing with a flourish with birdies at the 17th and 18th — both par-5s — to leave himself two shots in front of Sweden’s Robert Karlsson and six in front of McIlroy who had a 71.

Karlsson was a shot in front of a clutch of players on four-under including 2008 winner Miguel Angel Jimenez, another Spaniard in Jorge Campillo, England’s Chris Wood and Korea’s YE Yang.
