Monty turns to Clarke for Ryder Cup
NORTHERN Ireland's Darren Clarke will help Colin Montgomerie in his bid to win back the Ryder Cup for Europe after being named as one of three vice-captains yesterday.
Experienced Irishman Paul McGinley and Denmark's Thomas Bjorn were also confirmed as part of Montgomerie's support team for the match against the United States at Celtic Manor, Wales, beginning on October 1.
The US will be led by Corey Pavin with Tom Lehman, Jeff Sluman, Davis Love and Paul Goydos acting as his vice-captains.
Clarke, a veteran of five Ryder Cups and one of the most popular players in the sport, helped Europe to a hat-trick of wins in 2002, 2004 and 2006, the last coming just weeks after the death of his wife Heather.
The 41-year-old has struggled with his game in recent years and slumped to 102nd in the world rankings, though he showed glimpses of his old form when finishing second in this month's Scottish Open.
Bjorn, the first Dane to make the Ryder Cup team, has played twice in the biennial match and McGinley is best remembered for holing the winning putt at the Belfry in 2002.
"The Ryder Cup is about passion, commitment and will to win and all three men I have named today as my vice captains possess these qualities in abundance," Montgomerie told the European PGA website.
"Thomas Bjorn, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley are vastly experienced players who have the respect and admiration of everyone in golf.
"I am delighted to have them by my side as we head to Wales and I know they will be of invaluable assistance to me and everyone associated with the team as we aim to regain The Ryder Cup."
"The four of us will be a team. We are very much together and we will be making decisions from now on together," said Montgomerie.
"All of us have huge respect from the players, and respect on the course is vital."
Europe is aiming to reclaim the trophy after the United States won it back two years ago in Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky, its first victory since 1999. The immediate priority for Montgomerie and his vice-captains will be to monitor the form of a number of Ryder Cup regulars who look unlikely to be among the nine automatic qualifiers.
The captain will select three wildcards in his 12-man team and the likes of Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Padraig Harrington and Paul Casey are currently among the candidates.
Europe's nine automatic qualifiers, comprised of four from the world points list and five from the European points list, will be confirmed on August 29 when Montgomerie will also have to decide on his three picks.
