New No. 1 Miyazato captures ShopRite
JAPAN'S Ai Miyazato shot a seven-under 64 on Sunday to win the US$1.5 million ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway, New Jersey.
Miyazato, who turned 25 on Saturday, is guaranteed to take over the No. 1 spot in rankings after her fourth victory of the season.
"When I started playing in the States, that's when I really started thinking about being No. 1," Miyazato said. "That became a dream of mine, especially watching Annika (Sorenstam) and Lorena (Ochoa) play. Now that I am No. 1, I still can't believe it, but I do feel very comfortable with it."
Second-round leader MJ Hur finished second, two shots behind Miyazato. Fellow South Korean Park In-bee, the 2008 US Women's Open champion, was a further two shots back.
Suzann Pettersen of Norway, South Korea's Han Hee-won and Katherine Hull of Australia shared fourth place at 11 under, one shot ahead of American Paula Creamer.
Miyazato opened the final round two shots back and needed only three holes to grab a share of the lead. She finished with seven birdies in a bogey-free round that gave her a 54-hole total of 16-under 197.
The win was Miyazato's fifth on the LPGA Tour, but her first in the United States. She won earlier this year in Thailand, Singapore and Mexico. Her victory last year came in France.
She will replace Shin Ji-yai of South Korea atop the rankings. Shin has missed the last two tournaments after undergoing an appendectomy. She hopes to return to the tour at the LPGA Championship in Rochester, New York.
