New mother Shang grabs 2-stroke lead in Yantai
SHANG Linyin was the surprise first-round leader at the US$50,000 Yantai Yangmadao Challenge yesterday as the new mother shot an even-par 72 for a two-stroke lead in the opening tournament of the China LPGA Tour's second season.
Returning to competitive golf for the first time following a nine-month break after the birth of her daughter, the Shanghai-based Shang took advantage of the warm, calm and sunny conditions at Orient (Yantai) Sports and Country Club in Shandong Province to card a round of three birdies against three bogeys.
Chinese amateur Li Jiayun and Thailand's Narisara Kerdrit were equal second following rounds of 74, while China's Yang Taoli eagled her final hole to sit three shots off the pace in fourth.
Shang, a winner in Xinjiang in 2007, got her round off to a solid start when she rolled in a nine-foot putt for a birdie three on the second hole. The 28-year-old said she came into the tournament without expectations after playing about 20 practice rounds prior to the tournament.
"This is my best score this year and totally beyond what I anticipated. It's unexpected really," said the Anhui native.
"After becoming a new mother, I am relaxed and easy-going. I do not rush like before and had a good rhythm in the competition. I think this is the key point today. Maybe a little luck was involved."
Narisara, a 19-year-old from Ratchaburi, bounced back strongly from a disastrous start following three bogeys in her first five holes. She birdied holes six, nine and 11 to get back to even par before double-bogeying the par-three 15th.
"This morning the weather was cold but it started to warm up by the third hole," said Kerdrit, who finished equal 13th at the Ladies Indonesian Open last month. "Today the wind was not strong, but the greens were pretty soft making it difficult to control the ball or to get any spin or to stop the ball. The pins were okay today, not hard."
