Oosthuizen holds on to seal Perth victory

LOUIS Oosthuizen made his first tournament appearance in Australia a winning one, shooting a 1-under 71 for a one-stroke victory at the Perth International.

The former British Open champion, who led by three strokes going into the final round yesterday, finished with a 16-under total of 272 in the tournament sanctioned by the European and Australasian PGA tours.

Alexander Levy of France was second after a 66, followed by Australian golfer Jason Scrivener, whose 69 left him in third place, two strokes behind.

American Peter Uihlein (71) and France’s Gregory Bourdy (66) were tied for fourth, three behind Oosthuizen.

“It’s great to be back in the winning circle,” said Oosthuizen, who three-putted the final hole for a bogey but still secured a 13th career triumph.

“I always say it’s great to be nervous with three holes to go in a tournament because it means you’re up there somewhere — you’ve a chance of winning it. That’s what we do all the hard work for — to try to get into that position. This is a very special win for me.”

In Chonburi, Lexi Thompson secured a comfortable victory at the LGPA Thailand yesterday, a move that will push her past Stacy Lewis to become the top-ranked American female golfer.

The 21-year-old, notching up her seventh career win, hardly broke a sweat as she ended the final day with a 4-under 68 and a total of 268, six strokes ahead of Chun In-gee of South Korea.

Securing a US$240,000 check, she became not only the first American to win at the Chonburi course but also the youngest winner there, besting Tseng Ya-ni who triumphed in 2011 at age 22.

The win will put her ahead of Lewis, who had held the No. 1 American spot for the last 195 weeks.

Reigning US Women’s Open Champion Chun put on a brave fight in the final round with a birdie on the first three holes, but victory slipped away with four later bogeys and a double bogey.
