Ozaki back as Asian Royal Trophy captain
JAPAN'S Naomichi "Joe" Ozaki has been named captain of Asia's Royal Trophy team for the fourth edition of the matchplay contest, organizers said yesterday.
Ozaki, who led Asia to an unexpected 10-6 thrashing of twice-winner Europe in January, will choose his eight-man team in the next few months.
"We are determined to keep the Royal Trophy in Asia. We will do our utmost to defeat Europe," he said in a statement.
"It is indeed an honor to captain the Asian team for the third consecutive time, and I am fully committed to deliver the Royal Trophy to our Asian people once again."
The next edition of the contest, which features fourball, foursome and singles competitions, will take place from January 8-10 at the Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi, east of Bangkok.
Five-time major winner Seve Ballesteros, who underwent four operations to remove a brain tumor, is hoping to recover to captain Europe for the third time after missing the last edition.
Ozaki is yet to choose any of his players but told Thai television after last year's victory that Prayad Marksaeng and Thongchai Jaidee, the only players to win all of their matches, would be given the nod.
Elsewhere, host Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines will be looking to book their places alongside the world's best when they tee off at the Omega Mission Hills World Cup Asian Qualifier in Petaling Jaya today.
A total of 14 nations will be vying for three spots for the World Cup at Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen, south China's Guangdong Province, in November.
The first round and third rounds will use the fourball (better ball) format while the foursomes (alternate shot) format will be played in the second and final rounds.
