Paddy Power Throws Away $2m
TIGER Woods's failure to turn a commanding lead into a US PGA Championship win on Sunday not only cost him a 15th major, but also left Irish bookmaker Paddy Power 1.5 million euros (US$2.12 million) out of pocket.
Paddy Power paid out to all backers of Woods after just 36 holes when the world No. 1 was four shots clear at odds of 1/5 before South Korean Yang Yong-eun stunned the golfing world.
"It takes a special kind of dimwit to turn what should have been our best ever golf result into our worst," Paddy Power said. "Paddy Power punters are obviously the big winners here and have made like bandits getting paid out on Tiger as a winner.
Yang was available at odds of 150/1 at the start of the tournament and 16/1 before the final round.
Also on Sunday, Hazeltine officials had to tell Sean O'Hair to slow down. O'Hair was the first player on the course on Sunday morning, teeing off by himself at 7:36am. The American finished his round in a blistering 2 hours and 13 minutes, averaging about 6 minutes a hole.
He had three bogeys and two birdies, but had to be told to slow down at the turn because he was catching up to the hole crews who were still putting the pins in the greens.
Last week at the Bridgestone, course officials had to tell Padraig Harrington and Tiger Woods to speed up.
