Palmer sets early pace in light rain at US Open

BACK at the US Open for the first time since 2007, Ryan Palmer jumped into the early lead at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

The American made three birdies and no bogeys over his first 10 holes yesterday to get to 3-under par, a shot in front of Chez Reavie, Johan Edfors and Jeff Overton.

Palmer was one of six players to make birdie at the par-3 10th, which has proven easier than expected, at least in the early going.

Half the field was on the course, with the second wave getting ready to tee off. Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy were in the afternoon's headline group.

British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa was at 2-under briefly after making four birdies over his first 11 holes.

Defending champion Graeme McDowell and Ernie Els were part of a seven-way tie at 1 under. Els won the US Open in 1997, the last time it was played at Congressional.

The US Golf Association put the world's top three players - Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer - in the same group. Donald briefly shared the lead at 2 under but made five bogeys to fall to 3 over after his first nine holes.

On a calm day that started with a green-softening hour or so of light rain, birdies were available around a course that was expected to yield very few.

The US Open is almost always the most unpredictable of the majors, made more so this year by the absence of Tiger Woods. The former world No. 1 is rehabbing knee and Achilles injuries and is missing the US Open for the first time since he turned pro in 1997.

The Open has returned to the Washington area for the first time since then.

The US Open will also return to New York's Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in June 2018, the US Golf Association announced on Wednesday.
