Pan, Zhang share early Buick lead

CHINA’S Pan Yanhong and Zhang Yuyang each fired 3-under 69 yesterday to share the first-round lead at the Buick Ladies Invitational, the third tournament of the China LPGA Tour season.

Rungthiwa Pangjan of Thailand and Chinese Taipei’s Yu Pei-lin were one shot off the pace after rounds of 70 at the Shanghai Qizhong Garden Golf Club.

With rain showering the course in the morning before the sun appeared, Pan struggled early. Starting from the 10th hole, she three-putted her opening hole for a bogey, before an unplayable lie and a penalty shot resulted in a double-bogey six at the par-4 12th hole.

The 31-year-old Hebei native then settled down and carded three birdies on the back nine (her front nine) to make the turn at even-par 36. After a birdie on the fourth hole, the former power-lifter holed out from 13 yards on the ninth for an eagle-3 using a 58-degree wedge.

“I am happy with this score in terms of my bad start. I was 3-over on my first three holes and bounced back very well,” said Pan.

Zhang, a 23-year-old from Guangzhou, came into Shanghai fresh off a strong equal 33rd result at the World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup, the first major of the Japan LPGA Tour season.

She carded a solid round with five birdies against just two bogeys.

China’s Sun Lanlan, Thai Kusuma Meechai and Jang So-young of South Korea were two shots off the lead.
