Pavarisa, Qi set pace in Sanya

THAILAND’S Pavarisa Yoktuan and Chinese amateur Qi Tian set the early pace at the Sanya’s Hills Ladies Classic yesterday as both players opened with a 4-under-par 68 in the first round of the China LPGA Tour event in Sanya, southern Hainan Island.

China’s Feng Simin (69) was one shot back in third place at Sanya Dragon Valley Golf Club, while US LPGA Tour regular Lin Xiyu, the defending champion, was two shots off the pace, tied with Tan Lingling and amateur Man Jin.

Pavarisa, winner of the Wuhan Challenge in June, carded a bogey-free round that included two birdies and an eagle three at the 470-yard, par-5 16th.

Qi, a 14-year-old from Beijing who won her age category at the Volvo China Junior Match Play Championship earlier this year, birdied her last hole, the ninth, to grab a share of the lead. Her round included four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys.
