Players feast after foul weather delays start

Professional golfers are used to battling their way through all sorts of foul weather but the pea-soup fog that shrouded Whistling Straits yesterday at the US PGA Championship presented a different problem.

The fog was so thick that not only was the start delayed by more than three hours, the players were unable to practice on the driving range because their balls instantly disappeared from sight, leaving them with few alternatives.

"Well, I got to eat three breakfasts, so that's always good," said Tiger Woods, who was due to tee off in one of the early groups.

Fellow American Charles Howell III also used his spare time to fill himself up with three servings of breakfast after waking at 5:30am. He finally began his round at midday.

"It's a bit frustrating for everybody to kind of sit around (but there's) nothing you can do about it," he said.

"Being a major, guys are up, they are ready to go and ready to get started. To have the start I did, it was actually probably more beneficial because it did calm me down a little bit.

"There's always some nerves going at a major championship and a couple early birdies definitely takes care of that."

Britain's Stephen Gallacher woke at 5:30am and he too made three separate trips to the dining tent. Even when play finally did begin visibility was poor.

"I didn't see the ball land until the fifth hole," he quipped.

Bubba Watson, who ended the day as joint clubhouse leader at four-under-par, was already feeling tired when he arrived at the course after staying up late on Wednesday playing games on his mobile phone.

"My wife was yelling at me to go to bed," he said. "I wasn't myself this morning when I woke up.

"During the delay, yeah, it's boring. You don't have nothing to do," he said.

"I played two more video games on my phone. Threw stuff at Ricky Fowler for a while while he was trying to sleep. Pretty much the basic kid stuff that you do."
