Pornanong stuns Lewis with late flurry in Dubai
Thailand’s world No. 47 Pornanong Phatlum ended her year on a high when she produced sensational golf over the closing stretch of the Majlis course to beat American world No. 3 Stacy Lewis by one shot at the Dubai Ladies Masters yesterday.
Pornanong, who celebrated her 24th birthday on Wednesday, the opening round of the season-ending championship of the Ladies European Tour, made it a memorable week by closing with a 6-under-par 66.
Birdies on the last two holes helped her tally 15-under 273 for the tournament, one shot better than Lewis (69), who could only par the last two holes.
The win was worth 75,000 euros (US$102,770) for Pornanong, who had started the day two shots behind Lewis.
Spain’s Carlota Ciganda (71), winner of the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit last year, was alone in third place at 7-under 281, with Italy’s Diane Luna (73) finishing in fourth a further two shots behind.
Feng Shanshan of China, winner last year, and British veteran Laura Davies were tied for fifth at 3-under 285.
Charley Hull, the 17-year-old English phenomenon, won the Rookie of the Year award as she finished tied for eighth at 2-under. Her nearest rival, compatriot Holly Clyburn, who needed to finish much better than Hull, made a quadruple bogey on the 18th hole and slumped to a 79 yesterday.
In Hong Kong, China, Stuart Manley of Wales put himself in position for a first European Tour title by shooting a 4-under 66 yesterday to take a one-shot lead into the final round of the Hong Kong Open.
Manley made the most of benign conditions at the Hong Kong Golf Club to roll in six birdies mixed with two bogeys for a total of 10-under 200.
Wade Ormsby of Australia and Shiv Kapur of India both shot 66 as well to sit tied for second, while defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain (65) was among a trio of players a further stroke back.
Manley has never finished better than ninth on the European Tour.
Overnight leader Jbe Kruger on South Africa shot a 73 after four bogeys and a double bogey and plummeted down the leaderboard into a tie for 21st.
