Repentant Woods says: Leave my family alone
TIGER Woods yesterday apologized for having affairs and said he was unsure when he would return to competitive golf.
"I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated. What I did was not acceptable," said Woods, looking composed and speaking in a steady voice. His wife, Elin, was not present.
As for coming back to the United States PGA Tour, Woods said: "I do plan to return to golf one day. I just don't know when that day will be. I don't rule out it will be this year."
Woods talked for more than 13 minutes from the clubhouse at the TPC Sawgrass, home of the US PGA Tour, in Florida. About 40 people were in the room, including his mother.
Woods said he was solely responsible for his actions and was in treatment for 45 days. He said he would return for more therapy.
He also insisted there were no instances of domestic abuse in his marriage.
The world's No. 1 golfer had not talked in public since his traffic accident on November 27 triggered revelations about Woods' serial infidelity.
Yesterday's event was tightly controlled, with only a few journalists allowed to watch Woods live.
Woods shifted from near tears to near anger in a prepared public statement he read for cameras, in which he admitted to irresponsibility and extramarital affairs.
He said he spent 45 days in rehab for sex addiction and admitted he brought the controversy on himself, but took issue with people who "fabricated stories" about his wife beating him up.
"Parents used to point to me as a role model for their kids," he said. "I owe all those families a special apology. I want to say to them that I am truly sorry."
Woods alleged the media stalked his children at school and staked out his mother.
"Please leave my wife and kids alone," he said.
"I owe it to my family to become a better person. I owe it to those close to me to become a better man."
