Ryder Cup set for Monday finish after rain returns

THE Ryder Cup appears set for a first ever Monday finish after the start of the third day's play was delayed today when torrential rain returned to leave the Celtic Manor course waterlogged.
Organizers said a further announcement would be made at 11am local time (1000 GMT) and that play would not resume until noon at the earliest.
Spectators were told to stay at home and await further information before travelling to the Twenty Ten layout.
The US holders led Europe 6-4 overall but trailed in all six matches on course (two foursomes and four fourballs) when fading light ended play yesterday.
"We have been told by meteorologists the rain will ease off between nine and 10 o'clock, maybe 1030," chief referee John Paramor told Sky television.
"We will then probably need one to one and a half hours to make the course playable again ... and we expect a significant break in the weather this afternoon."
The opening day of the biennial team event was also ruined by heavy rain on Friday, with play suspended for more than seven hours.
In a bid to avoid a Monday finish organizers altered the schedule by scrapping the planned fourth session of pairs matches and squeezing two extra matches into the previous two sessions.
When the third session is completed, the 38th Ryder Cup will finally conclude with 12 singles matches.
