Scott cements top ranking with Colonial win, Rory strikes back
ADAM Scott lived up to his new world No. 1 ranking with a thrilling playoff triumph over Jason Dufner on Sunday in the US PGA Tour’s Colonial tournament.
The Australian rolled in a seven-foot birdie putt at the third playoff hole for the victory, cementing his No. 1 status in style. He was playing as the world’s top player for the first time since taking over from injury-idled Tiger Woods last week.
The 2013 Masters champion’s hopes of maintaining the top spot took a hit with a first-round one-over 71 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, on Thursday. But he clawed his way back, and had gone into Sunday’s final round of the US$6.4 million tournament tied for 11th but just two shots off the lead.
“This is a really special week for me,” Scott said. “It was, no matter what happened here. But to kind of find my way back into this tournament, around this golf course — it’s a real honor to win here. It’s a beauty.”
Scott rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt at the par-four 14th, his seventh birdie of the day giving him a share of the lead at nine-under par along with David Toms.
Toms then bogeyed the 10th to leave Scott alone atop the leaderboard, but Dufner, the 2013 PGA Championship winner, notched the last of his five birdies at the 72nd hole of regulation, draining a 25-footer to get to nine-under tied for the lead with Scott, who couldn’t find another birdie in his last four holes.
In Wentworth, Rory McIlroy put personal turmoil behind him to win the European PGA Championship on Sunday and said he hopes it will help him become the dominant player in world golf.
The Northern Irishman, who announced his split from tennis star Caroline Wozniacki just days after sending out the invitations on the eve of the tournament, fired a sparkling six-under-par 66 to come from seven shots back and win by a shot from Ireland’s Shane Lowry.
In Mobile, US, Jessica Korda, the 21-year-old daughter of retired tennis star Petr Korda, birdied four of the last five holes to win the Airbus LPGA Classic. Korda fired a bogey-free seven-under par 65, playing the last nine holes in six-under 30, to finish 72 holes on 20-under par 268 and defeat Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist by one stroke. It was the third career LPGA victory for Korda, who won the 2012 Australian Women’s Open and this year’s season opener in the Bahamas.
