Shin beats Creamer in longest playoff
SHIN Jiyai made a two-putt par on the ninth hole of a playoff yesterday to beat Paula Creamer and win the Kingsmill Championship, ending the longest playoff between two players in LPGA Tour history.
The players played the 18th hole eight times trying to break the tie on Sunday before darkness forced the suspension of play in Williamsburg, Virginia. They drew a crowd of several hundred fans yesterday morning, and needed just one more hole, the par-4 6th, to settle it.
Creamer hit her double-break first putt about 5 feet past the hole. She then missed the bending follow-up attempt, the ball hitting the right edge and spinning out. Shin's first putt stopped 3 feet from the cup.
On Sunday, both were willing to try to play a ninth extra hole.
"It's hard when it's just us two and trying to make a decision," Creamer said. "I respect what she wants, and she respects what I want. It's difficult. I said, 'Well, let's go back to the tee and see.' And then we talked about it a little bit, and we were like, 'OK, let's just play.' I teed it up, and it was like, 'Oh, my goodness.'
"My (white-headed) driver was brighter than the golf ball sitting down there, and I'm thinking this probably isn't a good idea. I looked at Jiyai, and Jiyai said, 'No.'"
The longest playoff broke the mark of seven set in Cristie Kerr's victory over Jeon Seol-an in the 2004 LPGA Takefuji Classic. Jo Ann Prentice won the longest playoff overall, taking the 1972 Corpus Christi Civitan Open on the 10th extra hole.
