Singh and Bourdy lead Irish Open
FRENCHMAN Gregory Bourdy earned a late share of the first-round lead at the Irish Open as home favorite Rory McIlroy's sloppy finish saw him slip five shots off the pace on Thursday.
Bourdy matched India's Jeev Milkha Singh's 7-under 65 and was in the last group to finish on a rain and lightning-delayed opening day at Royal Portrush's packed links course in Portrush, Northern Ireland.
Singh birdied six of his first nine holes and had eight birdies in all for the clubhouse lead before a 90-minute break for weather in the afternoon and Bourdy's late charge.
Former US Open champion McIlroy bogeyed two of his last three in County Antrim to slip to 2-under and a tie for 52nd after starting with birdies on No. 2 and No. 7.
McIlroy's Northern Irish compatriot and fellow major winner, Graeme McDowell, finished on 1-under 71 in his hometown with a double-bogey seven on No. 17 after he hit his pitch into the bushes on the 581-yard par five.
US PGA champion Keegan Bradley had a rocky start with a 1-over 73 in his first competitive round in Europe. The 2011 US PGA Tour rookie of the year opened with successive birdies and double-bogeyed the par-5 No. 10.
John Daly was alongside McIlroy on 2-under-par 70, while fellow American Rich Beem was 3 under after a clutch of birdies around the turn boosted his opening round.
Organizers had to put sold out signs up at a regular tournament for the first time after 27,000 tickets were sold for each day's play in Portrush.
With the galleries following local trio McIlroy, McDowell and Darren Clarke, Singh raced to 6-under through nine and had his only dropped shot on the par-3 No. 14 before birdieing the last.
Bourdy caught him with his bogey-free 65, finishing late in the evening with three birdies on his back nine after lightning had forced the players off the course for 1-1/2 hours.
