Stanford, Kim ahead by one

AMERICAN Angela Stanford and South Korea's Kim Song-hee were tied for the lead, one-shot ahead of five others after yesterday's second round of the HSBC Women's Champions in Singapore.

Stanford got off to a quick start with three birdies on the front nine on her way to a one-under 71, while Kim had a 70, leaving them tied at five-under 139 after two rounds.

South Korea's Han Hee-won (67) and Yoo Sun-young (70), Suzann Pettersen (70) of Norway, American Juli Inkster (70) and Japan's Ai Miyazato (71) were tied for third.

World No. 1 Lorena Ochoa -- tied for the lead after the first round -- had a bad day, shooting four bogeys, no birdies, and a triple bogey on the 18th for a 79, putting her eight shots off the pace.

It was reminiscent of her 79 in the second round of last year's US Women's Open. Her worst round on tour is an 81 at the Wegmans LPGA in Pittsford, New York, in 2004. But the Mexican was not yet counting herself out of contention.

"I'm still going to try to finish strong. It's important tomorrow to shoot six or seven under."

So surprising was her meltdown at the last, that rivals were looking twice at the scoreboard.

"I thought it was a mistake," Stanford said. "I looked up at the board and I'm like 'Do they have that right up there?'"

"It just shows how tough that (18th) hole is."

Australia's Karrie Webb, who was two shots back after a second-round 73, also triple bogeyed the final hole.

Last year's winner Shin Jiyai of South Korea shot a 71 to be within three strokes of the lead, while American Michelle Wie was six back after a 73.
