Stellar lineup set for HSBC Champions

More than 40 of the world’s top 50 golfers are scheduled to compete for the US$8.5 million WGC-HSBC Champions at Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai from October 31 to November 3.

Leading the way are US Open champion Justin Rose, British Open champion Phil Mickelson, US PGA champion Jason Dufner, world No. 4 Rory Mcllroy, as well as defending champion Ian Poulter and world No. 6 Henrik Stenson, organizers announced yesterday in the city.

Other confirmed names in the 78-man field include Brandt Snedeker, Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell.

As of this point, world No. 1 Tiger Woods has yet to confirm whether he will compete in the tournament.

Wild cards will be granted to Chinese players, with names yet to be announced, as the Shanghai event is the only one of the four World Golf Championships events to be held outside the United States.

Mickelson is the only golfer to win twice in Shanghai (2007 and 2009).

“It is certainly one of my favorite events,” said the American. “I’ve won twice at Sheshan, so it is a course I feel excited to return to. I am always made to feel so welcomed by the Chinese golf fans that I can’t wait to be back to try to win my third title.”

Rory Mcllroy also has high expectations.

“I haven’t won a WGC event so I would really love to add this one to my CV. I’ve had three top fives at Sheshan and the course really suits my eye.”
