Stenson defends Dubai crown
SWEDEN’S Henrik Stenson successfully defended his title at the US$8 million DP World Tour Championship, the season-ending tournament on the European Tour, in Dubai yesterday.
Stenson birdied the last two holes for a 2-under-par 70 in the final round yesterday, to finish on 16-under 272 and beat three of his Ryder Cup teammates — world No. 1 Rory McIlroy (68) of Northern Ireland, No. 7 Justin Rose (69) of England and France’s No. 22 Victor Dubuisson (68) by two strokes.
Rafael Cabrera-Bello (75) was leading with three holes to play but the Spaniard tumbled down with back-to-back double bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17 to finish tied for ninth with an overall 277.
The victory was Stenson’s first of the year and is expected to take him back to world No. 2 behind McIlroy when the new rankings are released today.
It also assured a US$800,000 bonus for finishing second in the Race to Dubai, behind McIlroy.
