Three share early lead in Ningbo

CHINA'S Yang Taoli and Huang Ping and Australian Danielle Bowers each shot 2-under 70 in wet conditions in China's Zhejiang Province yesterday to share the first round lead of the US$50,000 Orient Championship in Ningbo.

Australian Susie Mathews and China's Zhang Lin and Huang Meihao were one off the pace in the fourth leg of the China LPGA Tour season yesterday. Four players were at even-par 72.

Yang, the winner of the opening leg in Beijing in May, started her round on the 10th hole with consecutive birdies. She moved to 3-under after a 12-foot birdie putt on the 16th, before a bogey five on the 18th. A double-bogey seven followed on the first hole when she hit water twice. After another bogey on the third hole, she rallied to close her round with three birdies over the final six holes.

"A double bogey on a par-five hole is terrible," said the Sichuan native. "Yesterday I played the Pro-Am but there was a heavy shower so I didn't know that (first) hole in detail. Tomorrow, such a thing won't happen."

Bowers said she had her sights set on a bigger prize after opening her campaign with a round featuring three birdies against a lone bogey.
