Tian ends Thai run with Yantai victory
AFTER calling for Chinese players to end the domination of Thais on their domestic tour last week, Tian Hong drove home her point yesterday in capturing the US$50,000 Yantai Yangmadao Challenge with a wire-to-wire victory, her maiden win as a professional.
The 25-year-old Xi'an native hung on just enough in the windy conditions at Orient (Yantai) Sports and Country Club in northeast China's Shandong Province to close with a final-round 76, good for a one-stroke victory over Thailand's Porani Chutichai (74), the current China LPGA Tour Order of Merit leader.
Tian finished with a 4-over 220 to earn US$7,500. It was the second win of the CLPGA Tour season by a Chinese after Thai players had won the last three tournaments.
China's Guo Caizhu (76) was third, four shots off the pace, while compatriot Pan Yanhong, one shot back of Tian starting the day, ballooned to an 81 to finish fourth, six shots behind.
China's Li Wei (74) and Zhang Yuyang (75) were nine shots back in equal fifth, and defending champion Tiranan Yoopan of Thailand closed with an 80 to finish seventh.
In Ayer Keroh, Malaysia, S. Siva Chandhran of Malaysia fired a closing 1-under 71 to win his second Asian Development Tour title at the PGM Melaka Classic yesterday.
Siva, the reigning ADT Order of Merit champion, traded three birdies against two bogeys for a winning total of 8-under 280 at the Ayer Keroh Country Club in Malacca.
Artemio Murakami (73) of the Philippines and Malaysians Haziq Hamizan (70) and M Sasidaran (71) finished two strokes back on a 282 total at the US$60,000 event, which is the fifth leg of this season's ADT.
Overnight joint leader Hsu Chia-jen of Chinese Taipei posted a 74 to finish fifth with Japanese Takafumi Kawane and Malaysians Airil Rizman and Nicholas Fung on a 283 total.
The top three players on the ADT Order of Merit at the end of the season will earn their Asian Tour cards for 2012.
