Tiger, Stenson to play at Open with Cabrera

FORMER world No. 1 Tiger Woods has been drawn to play alongside twice major winner Angel Cabrera of Argentina and second-ranked Swede Henrik Stenson in the first round of the British Open on Thursday.

The trio will tee off at 0904 local time at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, organizers said yesterday.

Woods, who is now down at No. 7, is making only his second competitive outing since undergoing back surgery in March. The 38-year-old American has won 14 majors in his career and lifted the coveted Claret Jug when the British Open was last played at Hoylake in 2006.

World No. 1 Adam Scott launches his campaign at 1427 on Thursday alongside last week’s Scottish Open winner and No. 2-ranked Justin Rose and US PGA champion Jason Dufner.

Title holder Phil Mickelson goes out at 1405 at Hoylake with 2002 and 2012 winner Ernie Els and US Masters champion Bubba Watson.

Meanwhile, Mo Martin continued a run of American victories in the women’s majors after her one-shot victory in the Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale.

Following a period of dominance by Asian players, American Stacy Lewis won this title last year and Martin makes it three in a row for the US this season following Lexi Thompson (Kraft Nabisco) and Michelle Wie (US Women’s Open).

South Korea’s Park In-bee will defend the LPGA Championship next month while Norway’s Suzann Pettersen is the Evian Champion.

Martin was a real outsider going into the British Open but made her mark with rounds of 69, 69, 77 and a closing 72 that ended with a spectacular eagle. She was the only player to beat par and her 1 under total secured a one-shot win over Pettersen and China’s Feng Shanshan who both shot 75.
