Top rookies share lead in Shanghai

ASIA’S top rookie professionals dominated the leaderboard during second-round play of the CTBC Shanghai Ladies Classic yesterday as Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Ssu-chia (68) and Thailand’s Supamas Sangchan (69) shared the 36-hole lead at 8-under par.

Nineteen-year-old Ye Ziqi (67) was the top Chinese mainland player at one stroke back in third at the co-sponsored China LPGA Tour and LPGA Tour of Taiwan event. Fellow Chinese rookie pro Shi Yuting (68) and Thailand’s Wichanee Meechai (69) were three strokes off the pace at the 800,000 yuan (US$128,900) tournament at Tianma Country Club.

Overnight co-leaders Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras of Thailand and Japan’s Kumi Uchiyama dropped to four shots back after each carded a round of 73.

Rebecca Tsai was the top amateur after a posting a strong round of 68 to sit five shots off the lead.

In Bangkok, Joshua Younger sunk four consecutive birdies on the back nine to grab a one-stroke lead after the third round of the Thailand Open yesterday.

The 31-year-old Australian carded an 8-under 64 in the third round for a total of 15-under, nudging ahead of South Korean Kim Kyung-tae (67), who was tied for the lead overnight.

Thai teen Jazz Janewattananond, the other overnight leader, fired a 68 to share third spot with another Korean Wang Jeung-hun, two strokes behind the leader.

Hiroshi Iwata was one of 57 players who came out in the morning to complete their second rounds and the Japanese player picked up another stroke for a course-record of 62.

Iwata could not repeat his heroics in the evening, however, and could only manage a 72 and a share of 20th place.
