Tseng fires 67 to retake Taiwan lead
Local favorite Tseng Yani overcame testing conditions to shoot a 5-under 67 yesterday for a two-shot lead going into the final round of the LPGA Taiwan Championship in Yang Mei.
Tseng's third round included seven birdies and two bogeys as the top-ranked Chinese Taipei player overcame strong winds to return to the top of the leaderboard ahead of Anna Nordqvist of Sweden, who carded 1-under 71 at the Sunrise Golf and Country Club.
Azahara Munoz of Spain (72) trailed Tseng by three shots.
The 22-year-old Tseng, who leads the circuit with six wins this season, had surrendered her first round lead on Friday to sit two shots back of overnight leaders Nordqvist and Munoz going into yesterday's third round.
"Today my new goal (was) just to be patient all day, especially if you see the wind like it is, going 20 or 30 miles per hour," said Tseng, who took her overall total to 10-under 206. "I was going to miss a couple of shots, because with the wind like this it's hard to shoot a low score."
Amy Yang of South Korea was undone by two late bogeys in her round of 2-under 70 that left her trailing Tseng by four alongside fellow South Korean player Han Hee-won (70).
Katie Futcher (71) trailed by five shots while fellow American Alison Walshe (71) was a further shot behind at 4-under overall.
In Seoul, Lee Ki-sang's hole-in-one led to a 8-under 64 that propelled him to a one-shot lead over Anthony Kim after the third round of the CJ Invitational yesterday.
The South Korean's electric round started with four successive birdies before an eagle-1 at the fifth hole helped propel him past overnight leader Kim. The American player started the day with a three-shot advantage at the Haesley Nine Bridges Golf Club, but that quickly evaporated despite a 4-under 68.
Lee also birdied the seventh and 17th holes to take his overall total to 15-under 201.
Tournament host KJ Choi managed a 5-under 67 to sit three shots behind Lee on 12-under, while Thailand's Prom Meesawat (68) and South Korea's David Oh (69) were the next closest challengers at 10-under.
Four players were six shots back on 9-under at the US$750,000 event.
