US out to sink Europe in Ryder Cup
WEBB Simpson and Bubba Watson spearheaded the United States charge on the second day of the 39th Ryder Cup in Medinah, Illinois, yesterday as Davis Love III's team sought to clamp a stranglehold on the match.
The rampant Americans ended Friday's opening salvo of matches at Medinah Country Club with a 5-3 lead, having shared the morning foursomes 2-2 and dominated the afternoon fourballs 3-1.
The scoreline could have been even worse for Europe had it not been for an astounding putting display from rookie Nicolas Colsaerts which left Tiger Woods and his partner Steve Stricker empty-handed for the day in the last match in.
A similar 5-3 scoreline in yesterday's second round of foursomes and fourballs would leave Jose Maria Olazabal's men with a near impossible task of winning eight out of the 12 closing singles to assure 14 points and the tie they need to retain the small, golden trophy.
Simpson and Watson, who led the afternoon assault on Europe on Friday with a crushing 5 and 4 win over Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson, take on the strong English pair of Justin Rose and Ian Poulter in a mouth-watering lead match.
Then the US star pair of Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, who won both matches in the opening two sessions, go up against another English pairing in the shape of former world No. 1s Lee Westwood and Luke Donald.
Third match out sees Jason Dufner renew his winning foursome pairing with Zach Johnson against Colsaerts and Sergio Garcia, while the anchor match has Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker facing Northern Irish duo Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, who won one and lost one on Friday.
"I've tried to put all the big guns out for tomorrow morning," Spaniard Olazabal told reporters after watching his players lose Friday's second session 1-3.
"We do have to change the momentum. We need to have a great day tomorrow, both morning and afternoon sessions. That's what we are aiming for."
US Cup veteran Mickelson is fully expecting a spirited resurgence by the visiting team.
"There's a lot of golf left," said Mickelson, who is competing in his ninth Ryder Cup this week. "We are going to relish this moment and kind of enjoy today, because we have a two-point lead.
"But we know that tomorrow is a big day. We know the Europeans are going to come out hungry and ready to play. And we know how good they are, so we have got a lot of work to do tonight."
Europe has won four of the last five Ryder Cups, and it looked as if the Americans might be in for another disappointing weekend on Friday morning. They were actually trailing in all of the foursome matches at one point, and Medinah was as silent as a shrine. But Bradley holed a 25-foot putt to beat Garcia and Donald 4-and-3, their first loss ever in foursomes, and the splash of red on the scoreboard woke everyone up.
Dufner and Johnson followed with a 3-and-2 win over Westwood and Francesco Molinari, and Snedeker and Furyk made McIlroy and McDowell grind out their 1-up win.
That turned out just to be the warm up. Simpson and Bubba, who sat out the morning matches, bulldozed Lawrie and Hanson, going 6 up after the eighth hole, and the US rout was on.
