Woods, McIlroy to square off in China
TWO of the biggest names in golf will duel it out in a one-off showdown in October.
World No. 1 Rory McIlroy will take on 14-time major championship winner Tiger Woods in the one-day 'Duel at Jinsha Lake' matchplay contest in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan Province, on October 29, a month after the pair are set to take sides in this year's Ryder Cup.
The world's two most famous golfers will be the only competitors in the 18-hole event, which will be held at the Jinsha Lake Golf Club. McIlroy, 23, returned to the top of the world ranking after winning last week's PGA Championship for his second major title, having won last year's US Open.
The Northern Irishman will make his way to Zhengzhou from the BMW Masters in Shanghai, which finishes on October 28. Woods, currently world No. 3, is scheduled to fly in from Malaysia, where he will be vying for the CIMB Classic.
"It's an exciting concept and it will be a lot of fun going head to head with Tiger," McIlroy, 23, said. "The Duel at Jinsha Lake will be the first time myself and Tiger have come together to play a 'one-off' match like this, so I'm really looking forward to it. I've always looked up to him as a player. What he's achieved in the game is remarkable."
Woods has won three times this year and earned his 100th career worldwide victory.
"With the huge growth of the game of golf across Asia and the inclusion of the sport in the next Olympic Games in 2016, I think it's fitting for this great event to take place in China," added McIlroy.
