Woods, Stricker propel US
TIGER Woods and Steve Stricker won their second match of the Ryder Cup, leading the United States to a 6-4 lead after the second session at Celtic Manor in Newport, south Wales, yesterday.
Woods and Stricker routed Europe's Miguel Angel Jimenez and Peter Hanson 4&3 in alternate shot to improve their record as a team to 6-0, including last year's Presidents Cup.
The US pulled out another point when Stewart Cink rolled in a 30-foot birdie at the 17th, then stuck a wedge safely on the 18th green to ensure par for a 2-up win for him and his partner Matt Kuchar over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.
It was a miserable finish for the 21-year-old McIlroy. He missed a 6-footer at the 17th after Cink's long birdie, then stuck an easy wedge into the bunker at the final hole to ensure the Americans' win.
Hunter Mahan and Zach Johnson gave the US another point in alternate shot with a 2-up win over Italian brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari, winning the final two holes.
Ross Fisher and Padraig Harrington picked up Europe's first point of the afternoon, handing another 3&2 loss to Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. But Jim Furyk and Rickie Fowler stole an important half-point for the US, making birdie on the final hole to halve the match with Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer.
Earlier yesterday, the US, boosted by rookie outsiders Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton, grabbed a slight advantage when the weather-delayed fourball matches were finally completed.
Watson and Overton wrapped up a 3&2 victory over Europe's big guns Luke Donald and Harrington as the Cup holder established an overall lead of 2-1/2 points to 1-1/2.
After the deluge of Friday it was a glorious, sun-splashed morning at Celtic Manor and Overton in particular was in fine form, reeling off four consecutive birdies from the ninth.
"His putter was hot this morning and I love him as a partner," Watson told reporters. "It's nice to have one point under our belt."
World No. 1 Woods and Stricker won a tight match against British duo Ian Poulter and Fisher 2-up after Stricker was conceded a birdie putt at the par-five last.
Cink and rookie Kuchar, who had been 2-up after 12 holes, finished all square against Northern Irishmen McIlroy and McDowell.
McIlroy rolled in a curling 30-footer to birdie the par-three 17th and keep the match alive.
In front of huge crowds banked up and around the testing 18th, honors were shared with matching pars by McDowell and Kuchar.
