Yang takes Thailand title as Lewis falters
AMY Yang of South Korea won her second career tour title at the Honda LPGA Thailand in Pattaya, Chonburi, yesterday.
Yang, who won her maiden title on home soil in Incheon in 2013, finished two shots ahead of overnight leader American Stacy Lewis, two-time champion Tseng Ya-ni of Chinese Taipei and South Korean Lee Mi-rim.
Yang’s final round included five birdies with two bogeys for a 69 and a 15-under 273 total.
Lewis, who started the day with a one-shot lead, battled Yang throughout the round but fell away on the 15th where she carded a double bogey as her opponent picked up a birdie.
“I was a little bit nervous out there, but I tried to focus on how low I can go today, just focus on my game,” said Yang, 25.
Former top ranked player Tseng fired a bogey-free 67 to settle for a share of second place.
Third-ranked Lewis signed off with an even-par 72.
Spaniard Beatriz Recari had 11 birdies and two bogeys for the year’s lowest round at 63, which equaled the course record achieved by five other players, including Lewis and Tseng in 2013. Recari finished joint fifth along with South Korean Kim Sei-young on 276.
In Christchurch, world No. 1 Lydia Ko cruised to her second New Zealand Open title in three years yesterday.
New Zealander Ko, 17, carded a 1-under par 71 yesterday after her course-record 61 on Saturday and finished on 14-under 202, four strokes clear of Australian amateur Hannah Green who shot a last-day 68. Denmark’s Nanna Koerstz Madsen was a further shot adrift.
The victory means Ko will retain her No. 1 world ranking after back-to-back wins Down Under following her LPGA Tour Australian Open triumph in Melbourne a week ago.
