Yangs set stage for epic battle
CHINA'S Yang Taoli fired a two-over 74 under sunny yet windy conditions yesterday to take a one-shot lead after two rounds at the US$50,000 Yantai Yangmadao Challenge, the opening event of the China LPGA Tour's second season.
With a 36-hole aggregate score of five-over 149, the Sichuan native held a slim lead over defending champion Yang Hongmei (73) at the hilly Orient (Yantai) Sports and Country Club overlooking the Bohai Bay in east China's Shandong Province, while amateur Li Jiayun (77) was two strokes off the pace.
Thailand's Porani Chutichai (75) was the top international player in the field in a group of four, three strokes back, including Zhang Na (73) and first-round leader Shang Linyan who ballooned to an 80.
Yang Taoli, a two-time winner last year with victories in Beijing and Wenzhou, opened with a bogey five and then dropped two more shots at the eighth and ninth holes to make the turn at 39. She got her game going with birdies at 11 and 14, before having bunker troubles at the par-three 17th for a late bogey four.
"I have been consistent for the last two days, just a double bogey yesterday," said last year's China LPGA Tour Order of Merit winner.
