Deng, Feng grab gold in gymnastics
China's Deng Linlin beat her compatriot Sui Lu, the world champion, to the Olympic balance beam title on the final day of artistic gymnastics at the London Games yesterday.
Deng, herself world champion on the apparatus in 2009, gave China its fourth gymnastics gold medal of the Games, an hour after Feng Zhe had won the men's parallel bars title.
Sui, competing first, pulled off a difficult routine but cried on her coach's shoulder after Deng surpassed her by 0.1 points with a score of 15.600 at the North Greenwich Arena.
Aly Raisman snatched the bronze medal from 2004 champion Catalina Ponor of Romania on a tiebreak after the judges increased the difficulty element of her score following a review requested by the United States team, upping her final mark.
While Ponor, who came out of retirement last year, left the arena stony-faced after being demoted to fourth, the American was all smiles having just missed out on all-around bronze because of the same tiebreak rule last Thursday.
Feng Zhe took the honors in the men's parallel bars final to succeed his countryman Li Xiaopeng as Olympic champion. Germany's Marcel Nguyen came in second, adding another silver medal to the one he won in the individual all-around final earlier in the competition, while Hamilton Sabot of France finished third.
Feng, parallel bars world champion in 2010, now has two gold medals at the London Games, having already played a part in China's victory in the men's team final.
His score of 15.966 saw him finish 0.166 points above Nguyen, with Sabot posting a score of 15.566 to succeed compatriot Benoit Caranobe - the all-around bronze-medallist in 2008 - as an Olympic medal winner.
"I think the judges were more nervous than me," said Feng. "I have learnt so much from this experience. It has been perfect."
Japan's Kazuhito Tanake finished in fourth place, with his brother, Yusuke, seventh. After his teammate Zhang Chenglong had fallen from the apparatus in the opening routine, Feng followed Sabot onto the bars and smoothly established a score that would not be beaten.
Nguyen was the fourth gymnast to perform, meaning that he, Sabot and Feng had to anxiously sit through the displays of their five fellow finalists before their medals could be confirmed.
In the battle for the horizontal bar title, China's Zou Kai, the 2008 champion who had been hoping to give China a third gymnastics gold yesterday, could only manage a bronze.
Zou Kai had been the favorite to win the gold medal as China had won every Olympic and world title on the apparatus since 2008 but he was easily surpassed by a flying Dutchman Epke Zonderland who showed no fear as he pulled off three back-to-back release manoeuvres to whip the crowd into a frenzy.
Zonderland triumphed with 16.533 points and German showman Fabian Hambuchen had to make do with silver on 16.400.
