Doubt over lavish treat for National Gymnastics Team
THE Tianjin Sports School allegedly spent more than 160,000 yuan (US$25,281) to entertain 17 athletes and officials from the Chinese National Gymnastics Team, Beijing News reported yesterday.
A snapshot of the expenses was posted online last week, showing the school shelled out 161,046 yuan to entertain 15 athletes and the team's chief coach Huang Yubin and team leader Ye Zhennan from June 4 to 6.
The items included a gold pendant priced 23,800 yuan and 30,000 yuan of shopping expenses for the families of Huang and Ye.
But some people doubted the authenticity of the expenses because the account referred to Huang as director of the Gymnastics Center while his real title is deputy director. Earlier media reports also indicated that Huang and Ye visited Tianjin in late June, not June 4 and 6.
The Tianjin Municipal Sports Bureau said the account was faked and a bureau worker said, "It was obviously faked to attract public attention."
The State Physical Culture Administration said today that it has launched a probe into the case. Huang and Ye have not made any comment yet.
