Avs blank Stars to record 6th straight

THE Colorado Avalanche shut out the Dallas Stars 4-0 behind Craig Anderson's 27 saves to win their sixth game in a row on Sunday.

The shutout was Anderson's fifth this season and his second in three starts. He has allowed just two goals in the past four games, stopping 117 of 119 shots.

"We've just been playing great the last few games, making my job a lot easier," Anderson told reporters.

"We're making plays in the offensive zone and getting a lead," he said of the Avalanche's longest winning streak since March 2008.

Chris Stewart and Paul Stastny both had a goal and an assist for the Northwest Division leaders, who have won the first four games of a five-game homestand.

Brett Clark's powerplay score with the game five minutes old and TJ Galiardi's shorthanded tally six minutes later staked the Avalanche to a 2-0 first period lead.

Stewart made it 3-0 with his 17th goal of the season in the second and Stastny added the final score off a powerplay in the third.

"I looked up and thought it was an icing," Stewart said of his team-leading goal. "Then it (the puck) hit the ref, that put us on a 3-on-2 and (Wojtek) Wolski to Stastny and Stastny to me. I just tried to put it on net and it beat (Stars netminder Marty) Turco."

Stastny said he was also fortunate to score.

"I saw the shot got tipped and I was trying to throw it in front of the net, and I just got lucky," he said.

Dallas, the last-placed team in the Pacific Division, has won only once in its past 12 road games. "We need an attitude adjustment," said Turco, who had 32 saves. "We have to trust our coaches to help us figure it out."

In North Carolina, Carolina goalkeeper Cam Ward broke the franchise victory record, and Jussi Jokinen had a goal and two assists in the Hurricanes' 5-1 victory over the Boston Bruins.

Ward made 27 saves for his 131st victory to move one ahead of Arturs Irbe atop the Hartford/Carolina victory list. The Hurricanes snapped a six-game regular-season losing streak against Boston, and moved out the NHL's cellar - a point ahead of Edmonton.

Ray Whitney and Brandon Sutter each had a goal and an assist, Eric Staal and Chad LaRose also scored and Joni Pitkanen had two assists for the Hurricanes. They scored three goals in 6:36 span and led 5-0 in the opening minute of the third period.

In Philadelphia, Matt Cooke scored on a power play with 1:47 left to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 2-1 victory over the Flyers. Cooke deflected Gonchar's slap shot between goalie Ray Emery's legs.

Sergei Gonchar also had a power-play goal for the Penguins. Brent Johnson made 27 saves, allowing only Jeff Carter's power-play goal early in the first period.
