Blackhawks edge Canucks to extend winning run
THE Chicago Blackhawks needed a shootout to edge the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 on Wednesday as the reigning Stanley Cup holders extended their winning streak to four contests.
The game ended 1-1 and following an overtime period dominated by Vancouver, the Blackhawks converted all three shootout attempts before Mikael Samuelsson missed on the final try of the third round to hand the home team victory.
"It wasn't the prettiest game, but two points are two points," Blackhawks' winger Marian Hossa told reporters after ending a seven-game point streak. "We grind until the end and we're happy with it."
Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane scored in the shootout for Chicago while Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler netted for Vancouver.
Marty Turco made 36 saves to overcome Roberto Luongo's 31 as the Canucks (2-3-2) lost for fourth time in five games and continue to struggle against a team that has eliminated them from the last two post-seasons.
Sedin notched his seventh goal of the season to tie the game a minute into the third period after Viktor Stalberg had given Chicago (5-2-1) the lead with 38 seconds remaining in the first.
The Canucks played without forward Rick Rypien who has been suspending indefinitely pending an NHL hearing after he was involved in an altercation with a fan during the team's 2-6 loss in Minnesota on Tuesday.
Also, the Sabres punished Thrashers 4-1, the Blue Jackets whipped the Ducks 3-1 and Kings edged Hurricanes 4-3.
