Blackhawks top Sabres for first win

THE Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 on Monday to earn their first victory since hoisting the Stanley Cup in June.

Winless in their first two games of the season, the Blackhawks scored four straight goals to climb out of a 2-0 hole and overtake Vezina Trophy winner Ryan Miller and the Sabres.

"We really needed this win," Hossa told reporters after netting two goals. "We tightened up defensively."

In a return to his home town, right wing Patrick Kane put Chicago on the board with a wrister at 7:44 in the first period to trim the Blackhawks' deficit to 2-1.

Nick Leddy tied the game in the second and Hossa provided two straight goals, one in the second and another at 3:36 in the third, to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.

Tim Connolly pulled Buffalo within a goal with a wrister at 5:24 in the third to end the scoring.

Goaltender Corey Crawford made 32 saves in his first start this season for the Blackhawks and recorded the second win of his career.

Miller, who stopped 26 shots for the Sabres, was coming off a poor performance on Saturday when he allowed five goals in a 3-6 loss to the New York Rangers.

Buffalo got off to a strong start when Drew Stafford converted a slap shot just 14 seconds in, and Derek Roy followed with a wrister at 2:43 for the home side.

Sabres right wing Jason Pominville sustained a concussion in the first period after being slammed into the boards by defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson. He was taken off the ice on a stretcher but did not go to the hospital.

"You never want to see someone laying on the ice like that," Hjalmarsson said. "It's good to know that he's up and walking, and hopefully he'll get back as soon as possible."

In Philadelphia, Jeff Carter scored his second goal of the game with 2:38 left in the third period to put Philadelphia ahead and the Flyers went on to win 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Carter's shot bounced through the legs of goalie Craig Anderson. Darroll Powe added an empty-netter only moments later for some insurance on the night the Flyers raised their Eastern Conference champions banner. Claude Giroux scored a short-handed goal for the Flyers.

Brandon Yip and Milan Hejduk scored for the Avalanche to rally from 0-2 down and tie the game.

In other NHL action, it was: Islanders 6, Rangers 4; Capitals 3, Senators 2, OT; Blues 5, Ducks 1; Penguins 3, Devils 1; and Canucks 2, Panthers 1.
