Blues shut out Sharks on Halak heroics

THE St Louis Blues extended their perfect start at home to six games with a 2-0 win over the struggling San Jose Sharks on Thursday.

Jaroslav Halak made 25 saves to earn his third shutout in four starts, joining the Boston Bruins' Tim Thomas for the National Hockey League shutout lead with three apiece.

"From the very beginning, we had a game plan and we followed the plan," Halak said. "Especially in the third period, our guys did a great job coming back and we stayed disciplined."

Sharks center Joe Thornton was ejected after receiving five-minute major and game misconduct penalties for an illegal hit to the head on David Perron in the second period of a penalty-filled game.

"I felt like I established myself on the ice," Thornton said. "I just braced myself for the hit. He just ran into me, to be honest with you."

Despite being on the powerplay seven times, both Blues goals, by Matt D'Agostini and Perron, were at even strength.

Elsewhere in the NHL, it was: Kings 1, Lightning 0; Flyers 4, Rangers 1; Blue Jackets 3, Thrashers 0; Canucks 3, Avalanche 1; and Senators 4, Islanders 1.
