Bruins, Canadiens into playoffs; Devils seal title

THE Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens sealed National Hockey League playoff berths while the New Jersey Devils wrapped up the Atlantic Division title on Saturday's penultimate day of the regular season.

Boston scored three short-handed goals in one minute and four seconds of the second period, an NHL record, to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 and clinch their third consecutive Eastern Conference playoff berth.

Daniel Paille, Blake Wheeler and Steve Begin scored as the Bruins became the first NHL team to collect three short-handed goals on the same penalty kill.

Montreal lost 3-4 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime but the point it picked up sealed its spot in the postseason.

Andrei Markov had a goal and two assists for the Canadiens, who failed to hold three one-goal leads and will be the No. 7 or No. 8 seed in the East.

New Jersey routed the New York Islanders 7-1 to claim its ninth Atlantic Division crown.

Travis Zajac matched his career-high with three assists and Patrik Elias scored twice. Dainius Zubrus, Zach Parise and Dean McAmmond scored in the first period to ignite the Devils' highest score and largest victory margin of the season.

Brian Rolston and Ilya Kovalchuk also netted for New Jersey.

The Islanders late goal came from Matt Moulson.

The eight playoff-bound teams for the Western Conference have already been determined though the seedings could change after the last day's games.

Elsewhere on Friday, it was: Sharks 3, Coyotes 2 (in a shootout); Canucks 7, Flames 3; Predators 2, Blues 1 (in SO); Thrashers 1, Penguins 0; Stars 4, Wild 3 (in SO); Sabres 5, Senators 2; Oilers 4, Kings 3 (in SO); and Lightning 4, Panthers 3 (in SO).

In San Jose, California, San Jose beat Phoenix in a shootout, keeping alive its chances of taking the top seed in the West.

The Sharks were unable to protect a 2-1 lead in regulation, but Logan Couture converted on his first career shootout attempt to give San Jose a crucial two points.

That gave the Sharks 113 points, two more than Chicago for the most in the West. The Blackhawks have one game remaining and can clinch the top seed in the playoffs by winning at home against the Detroit Red Wings.
