Bruins beat Red Wings to advance in NHL

THE defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Bruins beat the Red Wings 4-2 in Game 5 of their NHL first-round playoff series and eliminated Detroit on Saturday.

The Bruins, who finished the regular season with the best record in the NHL, advanced to the conference semifinals against the Montreal Canadiens. Elsewhere, Jussi Jokinen scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and the Pittsburgh Penguins topped the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 to take a 3-2 series lead and Nathan MacKinnon scored in overtime to help the Colorado Avalanche rally for a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild and a 3-2 lead. The Los Angeles Kings staved off elimination for a second straight game by beating the Sharks 3-0 in Game 5 of their first-round series.
