Bruins bounce back to sink Coyotes in Prague

THE Boston Bruins beat the Phoenix Coyotes 3-0 on Sunday to split their season-opening two-game series in Prague, helped by strong goaltending to back up two second-period goals.

Boston peppered Coyotes goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov with five shots in the first three minutes but could not break through until nearly midway through the second period when Milan Lucic took a pass from Nathan Horton and banged in a slapshot just inside the left post.

Horton followed up with a goal of his own with nine seconds remaining in the period. Boston rounded out the scoring in the final period when the league's second overall 2010 draft pick Tyler Seguin scored his first NHL goal.

Boston, which lost 2-5 to Phoenix a night earlier in the season opener for both teams, outshot the Coyotes 37 to 29. Bruins goalie Tim Thomas put in a solid performance after Boston coach Claude Julien left Saturday's starter Tuukka Rask on the bench.

Boston looked far sharper in the first period compared to the previous night and its first big chance came when the Czech Republic's David Krejci hit the post.

Seguin notched his first NHL goal during a breakaway with his shot bouncing in off the right post past the Coyotes netminder.

"It was apparent we missed our energy a bit and I have to say Boston deserved to win," said Phoenix forward Paul Prucha, one of four Czech players taking the ice for both teams. "In reality we didn't get the puck for the first 10 minutes of the game."

The Edmonton Oilers scored three quick goals in the second period, and got another sharp outing from goalie Nikolai Khabibulin, to beat the Florida Panthers 3-2.

Khabibulin, who turned aside 37 shots for a shutout in his team's first game, made 26 saves as the Oilers improved to 2-0 to start the season.

In Calgary, Miikka Kiprusoff made 21 saves, Curtis Glencross had a short-handed goal, and Craig Conroy and Niklas Hagman also scored as the Flames downed the Los Angeles Kings 3-1.

Dustin Brown scored for Los Angeles, coming off a 2-1 shootout victory on Saturday night in Vancouver.
