Bruins rip Penguins to seize command
BRAD Marchand scored two goals to spark Boston over Pittsburgh 6-1 on Monday, putting the Bruins halfway to the National Hockey League final after two road victories over the Penguins.
The Bruins, who also ripped Pittsburgh 3-0 in the opener last Saturday, took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference final and will host Game 3 tomorrow.
Either Boston or Pittsburgh will meet the Western Conference champions, the Chicago Blackhawks or defending champions the Los Angeles Kings, for the Stanley Cup later this month.
Nathan Horton, Patrice Bergeron and Johnny Boychuk each scored one goal and assisted on another for Boston while David Krejci also scored for the Bruins, as Finnish goaltender Tukka Rask made 26 saves.
"We're very happy with the outcome," Marchand said. "We got a little lucky. We've got to make sure we play a little better next game."
Brandon Sutter scored the only goal for the Penguins, who lost back-to-back home games for the first time since the opening two games of the season back in January.
Czech goaltender Tomas Vokoun made his ninth start in a row for Pittsburgh, but was pulled off the ice after less than 15 minutes, having surrendered three goals on 12 shots. Marc-Andre Fleury, playing for the first time since May 7, gave up three goals on 17 shots in relief.
The last 16 teams to go up 2-0 in the conference finals have advanced to the Cup finals.
