Bruins rookie Seguin seizes his chance in style
TUESDAY night was a coming of age of sorts for Boston Bruin's rookie center Tyler Seguin, who scored two goals and two assists as the Boston tied its NHL Eastern Conference finals series with Tampa Bay.
"He was really the reason we won tonight," Boston forward Brad Marchand said of his young teammate. "He showed why he's doing to be such a great player and why he's always going to be a threat in this league."
Seguin's four points equalled a club record for points in a single playoff period during a stretch where the home team electrified its rabid fans with five goals on its way to a 6-5 victory.
The teenager also had a goal and an assist on Saturday, in Boston's opening loss.
The 1.85m Sequin is just 19 years and three months old and was the second overall choice in the 2010 NHL draft.
The first-year professional said he was frustrated not to have played during Boston's earlier series wins against Montreal and Philadelphia but spent the time practising hard.
Time off
"With my time off over the last couple of weeks I've been working on driving the net hard and picking up speed in the neutral zone," Seguin said.
That move was evident in Tuesday's first goal and in Saturday's goal as well. "I see Tyler in practise ... I wasn't surprised that he buried the puck when he got those opportunities," said Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas.
Asked if his success in the Tampa Bay series proved that he belonged in the big leagues, Seguin demurred.
"I'm not thinking too much about that. I wanted to take advantage of my ice time, no matter what it might be," he said.
Seguin got 13:31 minutes of playing time, well above his 9:38 minutes in game one.
"Tyler was really, really good for us, just going out there with lots of confidence," said Bruins head coach Claude Julien.
"He's been an excited individual, waiting for his opportunity, and he's certainly making the best of it."
Earlier in the season Seguin was quoted as saying he would like to model his play on Bruins center Patrice Bergeron.
