Canadiens' Price shuts out Canucks
CAREY Price delivered a shutout performance as the Montreal Canadiens snapped the Vancouver Canucks' six-game winning streak in a 2-0 victory on Tuesday in Montreal, Quebec.
Price made 35 saves, including 20 in the third period, for his second shutout of the year as the Northeast Division-leading Canadiens (9-5-1) won for the second time in three games.
It was a rebound outing for Price, who allowed seven goals in his last meeting against Vancouver a season ago. "It was obviously lingering in the back of my mind," the Vancouver-born Price said. "I didn't want to have that happen again.
"I just tried to do everything the right way and do everything fundamentally sound."
Andrei Markov and Roman Hamrlik scored against Roberto Luongo, who finished with 27 stops for the Canucks (8-4-2) in the first of a five-game road trip.
Leader of the Northwest Division, Vancouver was held without a goal for the first time this season and lost for the first time since October 20.
Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff took nine shots to lead the visitors, but Henrik and Daniel Sedin were shut out by the Canadiens.
"It's not easy to play against a line like that, especially the Sedins, but we knew we had to keep it tight in the middle and just give them the outside," Hamrlik said.
Montreal got on the board at 6:53 in the first period when Markov scored with a wrist shot, his first goal of the season.
Hamrlik's goal came on a powerplay in the third as the Habs ended an 0-for-17 drought with a man advantage.
In other games, it was: Capitals 5, Rangers 3; Senators 5, Thrashers 2; Lightning 4, Maple Leafs 0; Ducks 3, Sharks 2, OT; Flames 4, Avalanche 2; and Hurricanes 7, Oilers 1.
In New York, Washington made it five straight wins by downing New York.
Washington got goals from Brooks Laich, John Erskine, and Mike Knuble. Matt Hendricks' third-period goal put the Capitals ahead for the first time, and Laich added his second into an empty net with 5 seconds left.
The Capitals beat the Rangers for the fourth consecutive time.
In Ottawa, Jason Spezza scored two goals as Ottawa beat Atlanta and extended its winning streak to four games.
Chris Neil and Jesse Winchester score their first goals of the season, and Sergei Gonchar also netted for Ottawa.
Andrew Ladd and Anthony Stewart scored power-play goals for the Thrashers.
In Tampa, Toronto slumped to its sixth straight defeat, beaten by Tampa Bay.
Steven Stamkos scored two goals for the Lightning and goalie Dan Ellis had his second shutout of the season.
Nate Thompson and Dominic Moore also scored for the Lightning, who stopped a three-game skid.
The Maple Leafs have been outscored 19-8 - including being shutout three times - during the six-game skid.
